Inline Fuel Filter
Added a fuel filter just before the expensive Injection pump before I start sending vegetable oil through the system. Having the relatively large surface area of the fuel lines and Flat Plate Heat Exchanger (FPHE) without any filtration made me nervous. So I coupled this russel -6 AN fitting Part# 640000:
The filter part# 650130:
The filter has a metal mesh screen that filters to 35 micron and acts as a last minute catcher. The filter can be taken apart and washed if it ever clogs. Having it mated up to AN (Army /Navy) fittings will help with service.

Operation Greased Lightning
Dodge Diesels have a dowel pin under the cover that has been known to wiggle loose over time and could possibly require an expensive engine replacement. I've decided to fix this. The kit can be found from TST for $65.oo.
TST also sells a CAM Plate horsepower upgrade that boasts the best dollar to horsepower / torque gain for the cummins 12v 2nd generation engines. This will take my 180hp and 420 ft-lb of torque and transform it to 250 hp and 635 ft-lb's using the #6 plate.
TST offers both in a kit with all of the instructions at a discounted price. Here is the link.

New Centrifuge
Got a new pump / motor that supplies less GPM than the previous one from Ebay.
This pump / motor was found through USA Industrial Supply who sells Overstock. It was $125 after delivery it 3 GPM at 100psi. If you increase the PSI the GPM drop down. 100 PSI is the max.
My centrifuge is built to operate on a little less than a gallon per minute.
I would have to bypass 66% of my oil and do many passes in order to filter all of the oil and there would be no way of knowing that all of your oil had been filtered or not.
If I can't find a better deal I will have to break down and purchase this centrifuge from PA
Biodiesel: and sell mine on Ebay or Craigslist.

Re-Plumbing and Refitting
Sunwizard on the BurnVeg.com forums has a simple and effectively designed vegetable oil system specifically designed for the 12v 94-98 Dodge Rams.
Here are some pics of how I am executing a similar conversion:
This is a picture of the vacuum filter that I used previously and have decided to replace it for a system that puts the filters on pressure.
Use a hacksaw to cut the battery box so you can fit the Flat Plate Heat Exchanger (FPHE) at the rear of the driver side battery.
Here is what it looks like before
This is the area for the new pressure filter. Pictured is a water bloc filter, these filters will not separate water which is immersed in vegetable oil.

Centrifuge
Centrifuge installation has taken a couple of days so far. It's a fun project rummaging around the house looking for scrape material to use for brackets etc. The fabrication does take time.
The used Acura power steering pump that I bought with the new Dieselcraft OC-20 Centrifuge off of Craigslist came with a serpentine belt pulley.
Attempts to remove the pulley proved futile. The nut stripped but would not come off the pulley. If you can't beat them join them. So I took a Ford pulley that had been laying around and drilled it out to clear the stripped bolt.
Then with the help of some friends I welded the ford pulley to the Acura pulley.
Thank You goes to Anthony and Frank for taking time away from working on their race cars to help me.

Centrifuge
I have Droid phone and one of the applications will ping you when a new item you are searching for pops up on craigslist. Yesterday a Dieselcraft centrifuge and Acura power steering pump popped up. I picked up the new never installed unit for $100 dollars less than the $300 unit with the external pump that is required. This is a new project. Went to Harbor freight with my %20 coupon and got a 1/2 HP electric motor to power the Acura power steering pump. Now I have to get a pully, connections, and fabricate everything together. Also picked up a pressure washer to clean everything.
Stay tuned.
Stay tuned.

Troublesome fuel sending unit
Dropped the tank and pulled out the sending unit to find moderate levels of polymerization. The strainer basket rubs against the bottom of the tank parts of the basket are breaking off and getting in the line.
Here is a couple of pictures before cleaning.
I searched local sources for a mesh strainer screen. Ordered a sheet of stainless steel Corrosion-Resistant Type 304 SS Wire Cloth 40 X 40 Mesh, .0085" Wire Diameter, 12" X 12" Sheet from McMaster-carr. The part number is 85385T201. Cost is $9.92.
Bottom of sending unit sans strainer:
The plan is to zip tie the mesh cloth around the base of the sending unit and clip whats left of the old sending unit over that.
Dropped the fuel tank to fix the troublesome fuel level sender that has plagued many Ram Owners.

Changing vegetable oil plans
Recently returning home after 13 months away for military service. This time has given me a period to reflect. There are several changes I am going to implement.
For the Dodge:
Add a looped return and a third three way valve. This will put both filters on the pressure side. I will have to change the current vegetable oil filter as it is supposed to operate on the vacuum side. It will be plumbed exactly like sunwizard's but the valves will be electronic. A link to the diagram is below scroll down 3/4's of the way.

Going to add the cold up-flow technique and a centrifuge.

Dodge 4x4 Issues
The Willamette valley has been blanketed with four inches of snow and it's time to jump in the 4wd and have some fun. Pulled out of the drive way yesterday and started sliding so through it into 4 hi got to the bottom of the hill and there was no going up again.
It will be nice to test the vegetable oil system with 4 inches of snow on top of it.
The front axle will not engage. Dodge has a vacuum actuator that couples together the 2 piece right axle illuminating the 4wd indicator light in the dash. This is a troublesome issue to 4 wheel drive owners. All manufacturers have went to something similar to this.
Replacement vacuum actuators can be had for $90. The Posi-Lock 4x4 system found here can be had for $200.
I fixed the problem by taking the actuator apart and reinstalling it in the 4wd position. Eventually I will replace it with the Posi-lock as soon as possible.
Found the vacuum link and put some rubber cement on it. No trouble for the last two years.

Winter Tire Options
There are 4 real options for your rubber when your headed to the Mountain.
Option 1: Chains
Relatively inexpensive
Possibly the best traction
Annoying to install / uninstall
Time consuming (not good when your in a rush for fresh powder)
Worst for the roads
Option 2: New Studs
Solid traction and performance
Warranty
Expensive (oil prices have forced prices up %60 over the last three years)
Option 3: Used Studs
Great Performance for the picky buyer
Inexpensive (Great Deals to be had)
Quick trip to the Mountain
No Warranty
Lack of selection (Whats on Craigslist)
Option 4: Studless
Best for the road
Great Traction
Warranty
Similar Price to new Studs
Harder to judge effective tire wear
Lacks cool stud sound while cruising around town
With new tire prices still skyrocketing in the face of falling oil my money is on used tires. Studs are only supposed to last a couple of seasons but if the stud is still sticking up their should not be any issue even five seasons later.

Oil Collection w/ parts list
After snapping several 35 amp fuses trying to pump cold oil from restaurants and wrestling several 55 gallon barrels I have found what works best.
The answer is vacuum. Diesel engines don't produce their own vacuum unlike gasoline engines. Diesel engines do have a vacuum pump to aid power brake boosters and help with air conditioning, automatic hubs etc..
Businesses that clean portable toilets use the power of vacuum to suck number 1,2 and that blue concoction out of the sani-pot, Honey bucket, Skookum what have you.
Their design is cheap and easy. Hardly any moving parts.
There are several spots to T into the vehicles vacuum system underneath the hood. The goldenrod fuel filter housings w/ racquetballs inside keep vegetable oil from getting sucked into your pump.
Parts List For Cummins with Hydro boost brakes:
1/4" DOT approved air brake line x 20'
1/4" Compression fitting to 1/8" FNPT
3/4"FNPT x 1/8" FNPT bushing
3/4"FNPT x 1" MNPT Reducer x3
1" Ball valve x3
1" MNPT Close x3
1"MNPT x 2"
Golden Rod Filter housing x2
Raquetball x2
1" 90 degree elbow
55 gallon sealed barrel
2" MNPT Bung bushing to 1"
1" MNPT 90 degree to 1" FNPT
1" Fuel Hose
3ft of pipe that ties into a ball valve at the end of the hose
Made sure to use Teflon tape where any plastic threads where due to the nasty effect that pipe dope has on plastic.

Coolant system plumbing
Wanted to keep any rubber hose as far away from the exhaust as possible.
Assemble your hose in hose by first running the 3/4" coolant hose from the tank to where the hose in hose terminates in the engine compartment. You will need two sections of coolant hose that are 17ft long each. slide the 3/8" ID pex fuel line through the coolant line. PEX line needs to be longer then the coolant. Use PB Buster or WD-40 to help the pex slide through the coolant hose.
Run your hose in hose from your tank in the bed along the driver side keeping it close to the firewall and protecting it from abrasions wherever contact occurs
Secure the hose with scrap sections of hose and zip ties. Simply cut a section and split it down the middle. A decent pair of hose cutters will make this go quickly.
Terminate the hose in hose here. I used red 5/8" coolant hose for the hot side and black for the return.
Re route your hot coolant hose coming from the head to the Davco 382 filter. Route the coolant hose coming from the Davco 382 to the stock coolant rail; After you switch the rails and cut the rear bend off of the now passenger side piece of tubing.
After the tubing T in using 5/8" coolant hose. Route 5/8" coolant hose over the valve covers and into the hose in hose tee's.

Dodge Ram vegetable fuel system plumbing

They have good deals on fittings
After removing the stock fuel filter housing and all of the plumbing I went back to the only store open Parkrose Hardware. They couldn't match up the odd thread pitches in the and out of the stock filter and coming from the lift pump.
The goals was to eliminate the need to cut any stock fuel tubing with banjo fittings.
The stock fuel tubing coming from the lift pump to the diesel filter broke during removal. Remember to loosen the smaller fittings first when multiple fittings are stacked. I cut the tube flared the end and slide 5/8" fuel injection line over it.
The pre-filter input can be replaced with 1/2"NPT x 3/8 push lock hose barb pictured in the above on the left

Cummins Injector Manifold Return Vegetable OIl
The banjo bolt returning fuel to your stock diesel filter from the injectors is 8mm x 1.25 thread pitch.
*Or replace with this fitting on the right. I will be posting the part number from AHS soon*
If you go with the bolt make sure it does not cut off the fuel supply hole in the stock banjo bolt
Then purchase this tap 8mm x 1.25
Then this 1/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread) Plug and Tee
Drill through the plug with a 17/64" bit and tap.
Now take the banjo bolt / fitting you removed from the filter and install.
I searched high and low for an answer to the plug but the answer is the plug.
Here are some pics of drilling and tapping the bolt. Remember when tapping to cut for half a turn or so and back out a quarter turn then repeat. Your tapping that brass so it's easy.
Bored out

Rams
School has been canceled.
Ram project has slowed down, but it is speeding back up
I have collected 99% of the materials needed to complete the conversion.
Since last posting:
The L tank has been outfitted with the sending unit, and Hotfox
I taped where the hole was to be cut in order to protect the paint. Also coated the hole saw with grease to catch the metal shavings
Here is the blurry whole cut in the bed for the Hose in Hose plumbing
Veggie Gauge has been installed down by the transfer case shift lever with a stock panel screw
Davco 382 bracket has been completed minus brushing
The Davco 382 is a huge filter my bracket barely allows the filter to fit.
Ample use of grinder and this sanding tool to make adjustments
Snug
Also fixed the cup holder problem the other day by breaking it when pushing down my french press
The stock cup holders are notorious for being to shallow and ejecting fluids at passengers. The bottom piece broke and fixed itself
Maybe tomorrow I will fix the other one. Works with medium sized drinks minus the handle as well.

Cummins Diesel tank / heater
Highly recommend a thorough washing of the undercarriage before any work.
It will probably take 3-4 good sessions with a power washer and ample amounts of degreaser depending on the previous owners driving habits.
A clean engine will perform better and last longer.
Once it's clean keep it clean after your done playing.
Placed the plastic liner in the truck after cleaning the bed in preparation for the 105 gallon L shaped auxiliary tank.
Hot Fox heated fuel pickup came in the mail today here are the pictures.
